Abraaj Capital Prize winner Marwan Sahmarani is known for using a variety of mediums, including large-scale painting, drawing, ceramics and film to create his poignant works. His latest exhibition, Drifting Island, is no exception, pairing contemporary violence found in the world around us with the European old-world technique of depicting chaos.
His current work, mainly oil painting, focuses on the raw emotions at the heart of violence. In this exhibition he recreates his memory of a Spanish landscape mixed with people dissolving into vibrant colours. He shows a link between vicious brutality and primal energy by using what he calls a ‘fleshy’ use of thick paint layers. The exhibition’s vivid colours contrast with its sobering themes, and leads visitors to question the order of the world around us.
